Minks' "Margot" is a a catchy and easy-going pop track - just the song you want to remember your summer by. The repetitive synth refrain gives it a naive, almost cheesy, retro-romantic vibe. Add the smooth melancholic vocals of Sonny Kilfoyle, and you get a perfect rendition of the late-August nostalgia for careless beach days. Though "dreaming of the West Coast" might be the oldest, most repeated trick in the American-indie summer book, and "running away for the weekend" - the mother of all romantic cliches, the track is perfectly adequate to the season, as well as the overall musical tendencies of the genre.
The video for "Margot" came out on August 6, marking the release of Tides End - the sophomore album by the Brooklyn-based artist. Shot by Kilfoyle himself and directed/featuring his wife Danielle Harrington, the video is pretty DIY, and just as adorable as the record itself.
Compared to The Cure, New Order and The Chameleons (to name just a few) after their shoegazy 2011 debut By the Hedge, Minks continue to bring 1980s sound. Unlike the first album, which explored the darker side of synth-indie-pop, Tides End  flows on a more, let's call it positive wave. "Margot" is definitely one of the highlights of the LP, yet the rest is also worth checking out.
