Yuck is a four-piece London-based band and I've wanted to have their children since 2011 when I first heard their self-titled debut album. Their modern take on 1990s fuzz and lo-fi stands out, not because Yuck are doing something unheard of (fuzz revival bands have been sprouting since about 2005) but with the abstract sincerity of the barely tangible lyrics, the deeply emotional melody of the tunes. Heavily influenced by bands like The Jesus and Mary Chain and Yo La Tengo, Yuck mix the light optimistic vibe of college rock with the introspective sensitivity of shoegaze.''Chew'' is no different: the weeping distorted guitars set a dramatic mood, that derives melancholia out of noise, combining catchy tune and hazy lyrics. The track came out in April, 2012 and is the last that the band released to date. I sure hope the single is a part of a bigger project and Yuck won't become one of the many one-album wonders of their genre - that would be a bummer!
