Out of the latest singles from Bonobo's upcoming album Distance in Static, his new track "Drift" has captured my heart and my imagination.
One of the fascinating aspects that came alongside the announcement of the new album were the list of features. His cast of collaborators includes Arooj Aftab, Joy Crookes, Nilüfer Yanya, Ichiko Aoba, Nicole Miglis, and Aanya Martin. For this release, however, it's just Simon and his club-centric sensibilities are put on display as he blends compelling sound design with emotive moments. Soaring across the luminous synths are a range of vocal samples that feel almost choral in nature and enrich the track with an ethereal quality - especially during the build-up in the second half. This is the kind of electronic music that feels cinematic without sacrificing its rhythmic drive, making it equally suited for headphones and peak-time club moments.
