We were thrilled to discover London-based guitarist and producer Charlie Turner's music this week through his track "Base Qualia Check", co-composed with bassist and producer Basile Petite.
The track is part of his instrumental three-track EP Over the river / Under the river, released in summer 2025. Charlie shared about growing up listening to rock and punk before naturally falling for jazz, and drawing inspiration from London's vibrant and diverse music scene, all of which comes together beautifully in this project.
I enjoyed listening to this track so much. Not only does the composition feel so mature, with evidence of different musical influences and life experiences coming through the music. I was also really impressed by the level of musicianship and production - you can truly feel the energy of the live recording room.
And it only gets better as the track progresses - we heard a slapping bass solo and a soulful synth solo moment, but my favourite part was definitely the guitar solo and the groove shift towards the end. Can't leave it without a special shout-out for the drummer - amazing performance!
After listening to the full EP, I need to keep an eye out and start planning a trip to London soon, because this music needs to be experienced live. If you're also into contemporary jazz, definitely give this track (and the whole EP) a listen. And if you're even more curious, you can explore our new jazz of today playlist, available on all major streaming platforms.
