So Kelela is back with an early glimpse of her Hallucinogen EP, a project that was originally scheduled for May 5 before being pushed back to October 9. Released through her own Cherry Coffee imprint alongside Warp Records, the EP served as a bridge between her 2013 mixtape Cut 4 Me and her eventual debut album Take Me Apart.
"Rewind" was the second track to surface from the project, following "A Message," her haunting collaboration with Arca. The EP brings together Kelela’s futuristic take on R&B with a seriously forward-thinking production cast, including Arca, Kingdom, Girl Unit, DJ Dahi and Ariel Rechtshaid. The full 6-track release is a concise but hugely influential snapshot of Kelela pushing R&B into stranger, more electronic territory.
On "Rewind," you can't take away the great production skills from Kingdom, Kelela, and Nugget, and the additional work from Obey City and Girl Unit on the track. I have to say - they have their style well defined! Really cool song for this time of the year, to say bye to the summer and get ready for the winter for those of us living in the north.
