Having been a fan of Moonchild and PJ Morton for a while now, I couldn’t be more excited about this collaboration. Sexy, bold, and provocative, "Fear (Hey Friend)" is the sixth track on Moonchild’s sixth album Wave, which came out just about two weeks ago.
PJ Morton shared on social media how he was first introduced to Moonchild’s music while riding in a car, hearing something that felt familiar but new at the same time. “The more they played it, they hit me. Been a fan ever since.” I can’t help but wonder how that first moment eventually led to this collaboration - we need the rest of the story!
Although that wasn’t my first association, it turns out the lyrics actually explore the artists’ relationship with fear and anxiety and the idea of treating it as a friend. That made me connect with this song even more and I always love discovering more about artists’ personalities through their music and the things they choose to write about.
Musically, the blend between both vocalists is beautiful, yet each of them still shines in their own way. The groove, the bassline, the harmonies, the horn section - ooh! And honestly, was I the only one who listened to this track at least five times in a row?
If you haven’t listened to the full album yet, I’d highly recommend doing so, there are some absolute gems on there.
