“Midi Sans Frontières (Avec Batterie)” is a reworking of Squarepusher’s eponymous composition from 2016, conceived as his personal response to the Brexit vote. The remix carries the same power as the original (if not more) and unfortunately, the subject behind the track is still as relevant as it was five years ago.
The mid-tempo electronics are delightful and impressively produced, backed with atmospheric percussion that gradually builds up energy. Because of the unique and masterful way Squarepusher shapes his sonic environment, the mood of the composition shifts slowly, but more than noticeable as it goes from brooding, hesitant and dull in the beginning to exhilarating and triumphant towards the end. On top of that, there are some really interesting hip-hop breaks here and there, to make things even more interesting.
It’s a track that encapsulates the beauty and richness of electronic music in a perfect way.
