If I had to pick a favorite album of the year so far, Passed Me By would be at the top of the list. It’s the latest release from Submotion Orchestra, a group I've admired for years.
After nearly a decade without a full-length album - their last being Kites in 2018 - the genre-blurring seven-piece have returned with grace. "Midlife Kicker" stands out as such a cinematic intro that sets the tone for what's to come - a listening experience that stands as an opulent intersection between jazz, electronic, and classical music. The drums are packed with surprises and sit so comfortably underneath the glittery synths that lead the compelling arrangement.
