Polished with pristine sound design and colorful ethnic instrumentation, the latest release from Thoma and James Waterman, "Pressure," is a fascinating listening experience littered with surprises.
Los Angeles-based duo Thoma (Benjamin Hill and Tristan de Liège) are sonically adventurous with their influences - and their upcoming album Leaving Cycles is a shining example of this sentiment. The first single, "Pressure" is dance-friendly and incredibly bouncy thanks to the lively synth bass and the florid percussive embellishments. Much of the track's personality, however, can be attributed to its melodies. James Waterman's gamelan section fills the space with vibrancy, and when this falls silent, a compelling range of synths makes their presence felt across the mix.
