September 2013

The self-titled album of Moving Mountains is I reckon one of the most anticipated rock albums in 2013 (personally). The anticipation was additionally backed-up by my inability to listen the pre-releases on YouTube. Thanks Gema. However, just over an hour ago from now, the guys shared streaming of the record, which will be officially out tomorrow, the 10th of September.

*some 40-50 minutes later* I just finished the first complete listen of the album. Honestly, I had no expectations about it. I was just excited and that was about it. Now I am simply happy. An outstanding record, so far. It is definitely tuned down in comparison to Pneuma and Waves, but for some reason that doesn't surprise me. It sounds more mature, however there are a lot of similarities. By similarities, I mean mainly when it comes to the general feeling and message of the songs and lyrics. Actually, quite a lot of tracks revolving around acoustics. I guess this would be a good follow-up of those who enjoyed their EP New Light.

*24 hours later* I had the chance of listening to the album about 4 times and I realised this wouldn't be much of an album review, rather than sharing a few thoughts on the next step in the career of this extremely talented band.

There are a few songs which definitely stand out so far - "Swing Set" definitely managed to slow down the busy rhythm of my body which was still pacing ahead after a crazy day at... life. Few years back, the band definitely gave to the post-rock scene something which wasn't seen much around. However, as I said before, I feel that this album is a step away from the scene. The first scent of anything similar to post-rock is the ending part of "Seasonal" which is absolutely mind-blowing.

Following down the road is another track which grew quickly on me - "Eastern Leaves". By that time, however, I realized I won't be hearing much of Gregory Dunn's searing vocals and the raw energy from tracks like "Always Only For Me". Later on, I think the intro of combo of guitar and drums (Nicholas Pizzolato shows once more what an outstanding drummer he is) is the last really "hard" thing in the album.

I find their self-titled album rather an "alone time" suitable record. A time when you can just free your mind from the burdens of the day and submerge into whatever state of mind you desire. I know I will be spinning the record for quite some time. If you want to support the guys, follow them on Facebook, Twitter and/or buy the album here.

As final words, I think all their records really stack well together and I think going up and down those tracks is an interesting musical adventure.
