Introducing Atlanta-based bass player & composer Alex Hamberger and his latest single "Freshly Beaten", featuring some wonderful collaborators he's met since moving to Atlanta: Deshaun MG Allen (drums & percussion programming), Suuflai (keyboards), and Tiffany Goode (flugelhorn & trumpet). The track drew me in for its playful grooves, funky horn arrangements, and intricate basslines, but it turned out there's a deeper inspiration behind it.
""Freshly Beaten" came to me while running on the newly opened Atlanta Beltline Westside Trail. The trail was conceived as a way to connect folks from all over the city, creating walkable/bike-able infrastructure that would help ease the decades of economic disparity. While it has had positive impacts on some neighborhoods, others remain separated in a very real and noticeable kind of way. Seeing the gentrification happen in real time was a real melancholy kind of vibe. Sure, sometimes some things need to be destroyed for new things to take their place, but that can often mean entire neighborhoods and histories destroyed in the name of building something new."
