Thoko Namuya is a Southern African musician, Thoko Namuya, is pushing the envelope of R&B. Her music has been described as being “dynamic yet nostalgic and mellow”. A blend of distinct African rhythms coupled with melodies and harmonies rooted in her love for jazz and neo-soul; her music is paving its own path. Heavily influenced by singers like Sarah Vaughn, Erykah Badu and Esperanza Spalding, her vocals glide over production influenced by contemporary jazz and R&B. Growing up in both Zambia and South Africa, Thoko became familiar with Afrojazz, Rumba and Deep House, only being introduced to neo-soul and hip-hop as a teenager. After saving up money, she taught herself piano and eventually started taking piano and vocal lessons while studying full time as a student in London and Los Angeles.
