While we haven't featured Iglooghost on Stereofox before, he has been on my radar since the release of the 2019 record, XYZ. Experimental music at its finest, if you ask me. The album features a few collaborations with hyperpop / alt artist BABii that are nothing short of intense bangers ("Teef Chizzel" is a gym must-listen).
Fast-forward to 2026, Iglooghost and BABii (now daisy*) reunite for the creation of Cyst and a new off-kilter breed of IDM, glitchcore, jungle, electronica, experimental hip hop and dark-injected hyperpop.
Today marks the release of their debut studio album, ᲘᲘ (pronounced "ee-ee"), and if you vibe with anything similar to the energy of Burial, Die Antwoord, or even Death Grips, then this is probably for you.
"We got fixated on a really brief moment where weirdo hip-hop and IDM crossed paths at the very start of the millennium. We became really keen to excavate our favourite old records with this very distinct hybrid genre DNA. Presumably this moment in music quickly fizzled out due to the shows emitting too much body odour. We wanted to try and make songs that felt like a speculative continuation of computer music and mouthbreather hip-hop after a 20-year gap in the historical record," the duo share.
For starters, I've picked "Ecto" as it is the track that quickly sucked me into their hypnotic world. It feels like the kind of song you play while floating through and somehow elevating above the mundanity of everyday life. And honestly, it feels like a perfect sonic match for the album cover, too.
There is so much I appreciate about this record. From the visuals, which have this very distinctly British flavour, to the fact that they actually used their real baby on the cover. It feels especially fitting knowing that, from what I’ve read, the duo drew much of the lyrical inspiration from the mundane, ambiently stressful reality of trying to make a rap album while raising their first child - that constant juggle of creativity, parenthood, and everyday life. I do hope I got these bits right!
