Jhene Aiko's newest album Westside Whimsy is a nostalgic body of work that takes us back to a time in the mid 2010's where r&b was transforming and becoming a lot more personal.
After a 5-year hiatus, Jhene Aiko makes her long-awaited return with this new album that features acts like Kendrick, Larry June, and Ab-Soul. It really sounds intimate not only when it comes to the songwriting, but also the incredible atmosphere that we're welcome to on this. The track "Ceiling (Freestyle)" shines as one of the album's top moments for me - there is something about her conversational vocal performance that makes us feel like we're standing in the room with her while she's delivering all these lines. Her passion is matched by the instrumental, especially since it gradually becomes a lot more fierce and dramatic towards the end as she opens up more. Fans of albums like Sail Out and Sailing Soul(s) are definitely going to love this.
