One of the most exciting names to have come out of London's jazz/soul scene in recent years, Momoko Gill, released high highly anticipated solo debut album Momoko last week. Needless to say, this gem should not be left out of the spotlight, so I've been trying to find some time to not explore the record in full, but spotlight some of my favourite tunes off it.

The self-taught drummer, producer, songwriter, and singer dazzled the world with her Matthew Herbert collab Clay release last year, but it's really cool to explore her own sonic adventures in the form of Momoko.

Across eleven jazz-leaning gems, Gill lets her story unfold with quiet confidence and intention. Now based in London, with roots stretching all the way between Japan and the US, Gill carries that in-between perspective into every phrase. Something one can pick in the nuance, the space, and the way the melodies breathe and flow through the record.

I fell in love with "River" because it feels so home-y and familiar. It reminds me of Tom Misch, but with more jazzy flavour. A great gateway to the multi-layered Momoko, which I'm sure you'll fall instantly in love with.
