Ruby Francis is a London-based artist, DJ, and producer who draws inspiration from the timeless sound of neo-soul, r&b, and jazz music from the late 90s and early 2000s. Immersed in a vibrant musical upbringing, Ruby drew early inspiration from icons like Stevie Wonder, Björk, Chaka Khan, and The Neptunes. She began playing piano at age 10 and was producing music by her early teens, quickly forging a bold, genre-defying sound.
A singer with a distinctive voice, Ruby manages to bottle the essence of chill, while leaving enough room for her self-produced instrumental to truly shine. A song that doesn't necessarily focus on lyrics, her new single "Helicopter" explores themes of intimacy and appreciation.
Ruby shares, "At the time, I had met someone and fallen deeply in love. I was listening to a lot of wavy lofi productions from artists and inspirations like Georgia Anne Muldrow, Mndsgn, and Keifer at the time which heavily influenced the overall sound and bounciness."
Listening to "Helicopter" makes me feel light, and while temporary, that feeling of love she's talking about can be felt deeply ingrained in the composition, making it an everlasting memory. It feels unique because it captures a feeling in a specific moment, and it is not a song that she thought of and re-modeled many times. She elaborates, "I blinked and there was a finished song."
