Seki yuka is a Japanese pianist, composer, and producer who creates boundless experimental music inspired by free jazz and instrumental hip hop. Channelling her experience studying jazz in New York, Seki's art is a reflection on the everyday sense of freedom.
Her debut album, alphabets, feels like a breath of fresh air, and it is in complete congruence with her piano roots, while managing to offer listeners a multi-layered experience. Shaped from thoughts and feelings that surfaced through her open exploration of sound rather than a fixed structure, the record is an ode to freedom. I had the pleasure of listening to it a few times, and it inspired me to be more curious in 2026.
I picked "overflow" because of the multitude of genres embedded in it; it somehow reminded me of Shigeto and Com Truise, a sound I've been longing for in my life recently.
