While Ski Team's off-kilter pop, infused with jazz and anything experimental, isn't something one would expect of me to feature, her song, "Me", blew me away. A track that reached into that melancholic soft part of my taste I rarely display on Stereofox, and that's the beauty of being in control of the platform. The freedom to share the random music that made an impression on me.
The story of discovering the 2024-released "Me" is certainly random, and the credit goes to Jagjaguwar's founder Darius Van Arman, who labelled his latest Substack episode song of the year you didn’t hear. A publication dedicated to Lucie Lozinski, the artist behind the moniker Ski Team. Darius is someone whose work I admire and follow, so I always make sure to check out the stuff he is sharing to the world. This one was a pure winner.
The moment the saxophone kicks in, you'll instantly be drawn into this ambient-like intro, and you'll spend the next 30 seconds or so wondering what to expect, and what follows is nothing short of surprising (in the most beautiful way possible). The minimalistic instrumental and flat drums are the perfect stage for Lucie's exceptionally liberating voice. A voice that feels like sprinting across an endless green field toward the unknown, fearless and free. Music is amazing in the sense that I could play some Lamb of God and then go to this and feel equally empowered.
Lucie just released her brand-new album Burnout/Boys last week, so make sure you check that out too.
