Hey! My name is Angel, and I'm this week's guest blogger for Stereofox! My life revolves heavily around music - anything from producing, booking shows and journalism. If I have to be honest I don't really see the point in putting effort and resources in releasing just a single song, especially if it is a remix. Exactly this was the case with the first issue of the newly founded label Edged. It was also my first encounter with Skyence, the author of the original Pain Call piece, which in this release was reworked by Ben Lukas Boysen alas Hecq. I've known him so far mostly for his commercial work in the advertisement sector and for his recent contribution to the Ableton Live sound resources. The piece that Edged put out is not an exclusion from his top quality approach to sound. Hecq's interpretation of Pain Call is definitely my cup of tea in all aspects. The piece is dominated by microsounds, eclectically transitioning and culminating into each other, while another layer, far more melodic and atmospheric is somehow hiding in the back plan the sound.

Sometimes this mellow and melodic level feels a bit distant, but this is actually a great aesthetical choice, because it helps the track to accumulate an impressive amount of tension, having in mind how minimalist and delicate it is. The clear separation of the main sound structures for me acted like a strong life metaphor. It felt like implying everything you hear, experience or witness during your short existence, but you will never truly reach. Quite a deep feeling imposed only by 10 minutes of music. Quite a sensible contemplation, which sufficiently convinced me that you can release whatever you want, despite it's length or nature. Especially when it is so expressive and intelligent.
