I first stumbled across Summers Sons in 2019 with "Bittersweet" (and called them my new fav find).
Today, the South London rapper-producer hip-hop duo teamed up with frequent collaborator, producer and keyboardist C.Tappin, for their debut on the UK label DeepMatter.
The 13-track Lightworks takes the trio's sound to the next level, transitioning from sampling to full live instrumentation. Blending chill rap with soul, jazz, and r&b, the project was inspired by a live show of D’Angelo & The Vanguard in 2018. What followed was an eight-year journey of writing, recording, and collaborating with musicians from London's thriving jazz and hip-hop scene, all while navigating the changing responsibilities of life and becoming parents.
I wanted to highlight "Know Better", as I really think it showcases their sound evolution - with Latin grooves, playful keys, lush sax, and stripped-down production, balancing smooth flow and summery (pun intended) vocalisation.
Make sure to check the full album, it's lovely.
