I've been on absolute fire when it comes to discovering music, and while the 4 cups of coffee might help, I feel like riding the hype of all the great sounds that came on my radar this week.
As a drummer, I feel naturally drawn to a tight groove and solid rhythm section, and that's what Willy Delphia's "Waiting" brings to the table. The London-based New Zealander joins forces with one of the most impressive voices in modern indie soul, fellow Kiwi Arjuna Oakes, for the delivery of absolute psychedelia. "Waiting" blends jazz house, disco, and indie soul, and it's the kind of song that will make you wana take out your dancing shoes.
"We tracked the rhythm section groove in one take at Lloyd Haines' studio in Finsbury Park at the end of 2023, back when Sam and I were both very new to London, and it was super exciting to be recording music here for the first time," Willy recalls. "I then sat on the stems for ages, until I rediscovered them by accident. Arjuna came through to my shipping container studio, and we began writing over this weird groove. For whatever reason, we didn't record the rhythm tracks to a click, so as a result, I was quite limited in what I could add in the production stage, and I think this influenced the final track a lot," the talented producer and drummer elaborates.
This is the second single from Willy Delphia's debut EP, All In, scheduled for release later this year, so keep an eye on this guy.
