In times when minimalistic bands like Warpaint and The XX are the front-runners of the more experimental side of the indie scene and their guitar rock contemporaries are all for the raw sound, it's rare to see someone who actually wants to make a layered and ambitious record.

The Horrors are bringing all of their fantasy and inspiration on their latest offering, Luminious, which starts where the excellent Skying (2011) ended. It continues their now trademark dreamy and rich sound but this time with even more twists and unexpected mood changes.

There's a bit from Morrissey's theatrical delivery on "Change Your Mind" and you may think that there is a buried Velvet Underground song underneath all the effects on First Day of Spring, but what's also fascinating about this record is the lack of associations with other bands. Luminous is an obvious step forward for the band and it's one that so many bands from their generation couldn't do. A step beyond what originally impressed the masses and towards creating their own genre.
