Been absolutely in love with Ogi's voice since we worked together on "Weak With Me", part of UK producer noxz's Safe To Be_ album, released on our label in June. So when I heard this song, there was no way I was going to let it slip by without giving it the attention it deserves.
"Never Been" is a soulful R&B gem from Chicago-based drummer, composer-songwriter and photographer Alvin Cobb Jr. (work with Chance the Rapper, Marcus Printup, Patricia Barber). Heavily inspired by straight-ahead jazz trio playing, his music also incorporates cinematic textures, folk melodies, free improvisation, and modern Black music elements from Hip-Hop and R&B.
The track is part of his sophomore album, The Chase And The Runaway, released in July. Co-written by Alvin and Ogi, the song centres around convincing yourself to take a leap of faith, even when you're not quite sure where you'll land. Sparkling Rhodes, soulful guitar, and a slow, sensual groove create the perfect backdrop for Ogi's irresistible vocals, which effortlessly glide across her range. I could literally listen to this song on repeat all day.
