There are numerous factors that make James Blake's new album Trying Times quite significant from the eyes and ears of a casual listener, and from an avid fan of his music.
Firstly, this is his first album ever that he has released independently; secondly, Jame's sonic aesthetic throughout the project acquaints us with the past, present, and possibly the future. The track "Trying Times" represents the potential future as we hear James Blake's voice floating over an indie-leaning, guitar-driven instrumental, which took me by surprise. In some ways, I'm actually reminded of Sam Smith, yet in a manner that's haunting and still dreamy. The incredible songwriting from this track certainly can't escape mention either, particularly in the chorus, where the concept of life and death is used to bring to light feelings of affection.
