Say hi to the future of jazz.
Drummer, producer, bandleader, and DJ, Mackwood makes his debut on our mates Tru Thoughts with his very first single for the label. I've had the pleasure of listening to the track this morning in the gym, and there's one thing I can share - I did a personal best on the chest dip (20kg plate) while listening to it. YEAH!
On "Sammy", the talented London-based artist channels not only his jazz roots, but his love (and the overall energy) of the UK capital's club scene. The track is an absolute behemoth.
"This track feels like all of London at once," Mackwood shares. "I've seen people skank to it live, I've had MCs shell on it at jams, I've watched people go introspective to it with headphones on. Excited to see what other ways it finds people." As he shares, this is future jazz, born in the dance.
Named after close friend and saxophonist Sam Norris, the tune also features Jay Verma on keys and Laurence Wilkins on trumpet. Together, they tap into London's rich musical melting pot, landing somewhere between a loose jam, instrumental grime and a proper late-night heater. What I love the most about the song is the fact that it keeps shifting and evolving, but those recurring motifs give it a thread that pulls you all the way through. Like a guiding light through the dark club.
I hope we get to see a full studio album soon too.
