Danish, London-based singer Marie Dahlstrom unveils her third studio album MARIE. After a few upfront singles, including a collaboration with Jords and the summery "1 Journey Away" with Elijah Fox on the synths, the full 11-track LP is out today on her own JFH Records.
Created over a couple of years in between London, Copenhagen, and LA, MARIE explores the "building of a grounded and meaningful life while existing between cities, cultures, and creative worlds" and reflects on "family, distance, belonging and adulthood."
The album takes a jazzier approach than her previous more neo-soul/r&b-leaning LPs Like Sand and A Good Life. A perfect showcase of that is the focus track "Joined," featuring the full Butcher Brown band - with honeyed vocals, an intoxicating rhythm, and distant horns, recorded with real instruments.
Dahlstrom shares, "I made a voice note on the piano, just simple vocals and piano, and sent it to Corey [Fonville, of Butcher Brown]. Him and the guys went straight to the studio and recorded Joined. It was a really cool way to get their interpretation of the demo. The song is about my 2nd son Levi, and how he has joined our family together in a new, stronger way."
