That's a record I've been waiting to share with the world because there are no words in my vocabulary to describe the transformative experience that Thoma's Leaving Cycles is. I don't say this lightly - you can't truly understand this album unless you listen to it all the way through at least once, uninterrupted.
The depth that Tristan, Ben, and James go to in order to create a truly unique sonic experience is unreal.
"Leaving Cycles is a project we made in collaboration with our friend James Waterman. We were very inspired by Indonesian gamelan music, West African polyrhythms, and Latin percussion, and James is a master of world percussion, so he was able to bring these influences to the record with us. We also wanted it to be a dialogue between synths and live percussion, with synths and drum machines sometimes playing the percussive role and the live percussion sometimes playing the harmonic/melodic role as well, as a conversation between man and machine," they share. That’s all the information you need before diving into the 12 tracks.
For today's spotlight, I decided to go with my all-time favourite Leaving Cycles track, "Gravity". Honestly, even now, some 100 listens later, I get goosebumps from the brilliant way the synths build. Also, don't get me started on that off-kilter beat. I've done some pretty peculiar dance moves in my room, and at this point, I am convinced my wife thinks there's something wrong with me.
Also, Tristan and Ben did some really cool mini interview series, which we turned into a storytelling post on Instagram. I am not a great social media manager, but I am surely proud of how it turned out. I wouldn't miss it if I were you.
