It's 5:46 AM, the world's asleep, and I finally have the chance to fully indulge myself in a very special joint project from our friends at Chillhop Music and Monstercat.
The teams had the brilliant idea to reimagine Canadian producer's debut cinematic electronica album, WHIPPED CREAM, through the prism of some of the most talented beatmakers in the world. A match made in heaven.
Before captivating audiences with cinematic bass music, WHIPPED CREAM spent years as a competitive figure skater, an experience that helped shape the discipline and emotional intensity behind her artistry today. The Toronto-born producer, songwriter, and vocalist has carved out a distinctive space between electronica, hip-hop, and film-score grandeur, drawing inspiration from everyone from Hans Zimmer to Skrillex. Whether through her productions or dynamic live performances, WHIPPED CREAM continues to build a world defined by atmosphere, emotion, and unmistakable energy.
I actually knew her work before this remix album and was pleasantly surprised when I saw the email about the announcement. The team at Chillhop has put a lot of work into selecting the right producers for this lofi mission, and they absolutely nailed it. From xander.'s punchy take on "stranger" to Ward Wills' hazy guitar-driven reinterpretation of "a different self, not this time", the collection finds new life in the originals while embracing lofi textures, warm grooves, and sun-drenched atmospheres.
For this spotlight, I chose Ian Ewing's ethereal new version of "ellie's song". The original is as haunting and emotional as it gets with a very puncy drum&bass-like beat - all of this, of course, toned down by Ian Ewing, who has a special place in my heart. He managed to create a safe haven for any distressed mind and further explore the gentleness of the vocals.
This is the first official release between the two labels, and I hope it won't be the last one.
