As conversations around AI-generated music on major streaming platforms become more common and more controversial, the value of human-made, algorithm-free music discovery keeps growing. One of the main global streaming platforms, Spotify, has more jazz playlists than ever, but many feel increasingly algorithmic.
To spotlight upcoming artists shaping the sound of jazz today, I recently curated a list of Modern Jazz Artists to Watch in 2026, but quickly realised that 15 artists are nowhere near enough for a dedicated jazz digger.

Since 2013, we've reviewed more than 20,000 independent music submissions and featured over 500 releases across Stereofox playlists and our record label, many of them within the jazz spectrum. Add to that my background as a jazz musician (I completed a Master's degree in Jazz Performance at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London) and our team's decade-plus of music curation, and you're in good hands.

Why Human-Curated (Jazz) Playlists Still Matter
Maybe this makes me old-fashioned, but I still enjoy getting to know the real person behind the things I listen to, read, or buy. I want to find out what got them into music, why they keep coming back to jazz, and which records changed their life. That human context turns music discovery into getting to know new people as well.

Jazz also presents a challenge that algorithms don't always handle particularly well. It's a niche, constantly evolving genre, often not understood by the mainstream. Many outstanding artists rely heavily on live performances, and are still building their digital audiences. I've heard a lot of great music with fewer than 1,000 streams, which would probably not appear in an algorithmic recommendation.
Usually, the algorithm recommends similar things you already listen to and like. A human curator has a higher chance of surprising you and suggesting something you might have never gravitated towards, but end up enjoying. Or you might not like it, still, you've discovered some new music and facts about yourself today.
And probably the most important thing a human curator can bring is: they've seen an artist perform live, spoken to them after a show, followed their evolution over several years, or they've known them before everyone else did. Also, they might represent a local scene and follow its development much more closely. They don't select music according to listening data alone, but according to artists they have connected with, or associate with a particular experience.
Modern Jazz Styles Explained - What is Modern Jazz?
Modern jazz is incredibly broad and constantly evolving, making it almost impossible to place it in a single frame. Rather than a distinct genre, it's better thought of as a spectrum of music that builds on jazz traditions while embracing influences from funk, hip-hop, electronic music, rock, soul, folk, classical music, and musical cultures from around the world. Depending on the artist, that might include odd time signatures, adventurous improvisation, rich harmonic language, rhythmic experimentation, synthesisers and effects, live electronics, or an innovatory approach to an instrument.
Modern jazz doesn't always have to be extremely crazy or complicated, though. Sometimes it's as simple as a beautifully recorded solo piano album that you could listen to for hours.
How do we select the playlists? / What criteria do we use to select the playlists? / Selection criteria
While putting this list together, we had a few non-negotiables:
- every playlist had to be curated by real people with some established level of expertise
- updated regularly rather than abandoned after a few months;
- free from AI-generated music as far as we could verify;
- and together, they needed to represent the breadth of modern jazz - jazztronica, future jazz, fusion, jazzhop and beyond
Naturally, this isn't an exhaustive list, and we're aware that there are plenty of brilliant jazz curators we couldn't fit into just ten playlists. If you have a favourite jazz curator that's missing from the list, we'd love to hear from you.

One of the most prolific curators in the jazz / soul space these days, Josh has been a safe haven for anything jazz-adjacent for years now. In case you're lost, drop by the playlist on a Friday morning, and you won't regret it.
Beyond being an exceptional curator, he's also a label owner, DJ, digital marketer, and A&R, so you're in safe hands. He's one of those rare people who always seems to have their finger on the pulse of the scene, consistently uncovering what's next before everyone else.

Jazz UK * Spitting Fire by DJ Tina Edwards
A DJ, broadcaster, educator, and Bandcamp host, Tina Edwards is a household name when it comes to trippy, yet groovy jazz music. A fierce advocate for artists' rights, she's also an incredible source of knowledge and someone we all rely on at Stereofox for advice and perspective.
Her extensive bio is further enriched by her work with Tim Garcia on re:sonate and the Queer Jazz project. I guess you don't need more convincing to know this playlist is fire (pun intended).

FUTURE JAZZ 2026 by Mauricesax
If you’re a jazz enthusiast, you probably don’t need an introduction to Mauricesax, a brilliant artist, saxophonist and producer from Germany. But if you’re curious to dive into his personal pick of future jazz influences (that also inspire his own artistry) - here you go.

There's some great fusion of jazz and electronica in there, including a fair bit of more out-there, experimental stuff. These guys have got plenty of great playlists, and it was genuinely hard for me to pick just one for this selection, so here are two more I’ve been into - 2026: New Jazz | Fusion | Nu Jazz, and Upbeat Jazz Fusion.

One of the most creative records in the UK jazz space, DeepMatter Records, is running a stellar curation of its own.
Founded in 2017 by Tom Pickford, DeepMatter has established itself at the forefront of contemporary jazz, championing a diverse spectrum of genres and forward-thinking artists like SHOLTO, Surprise Chef, or Hermanos Gutiérrez. I've picked their Flow State playlist, a go-to destination for immersive, zen-inspired sounds and moments of musical calm.
New Jazz Releases by jazzineu
Launched in 2013, Jazz In Europe has become one of the leading English-language platforms dedicated to jazz and its ever-expanding universe. Covering everything from album releases and artist interviews to festival reports, concert reviews, industry stories, and the broader contemporary jazz ecosystem, it remains an essential resource for anyone looking to stay connected with the scene.
This is a selection for the classic, live-instrumentation jazz sound lovers.
Jazz & Lofi Beats by Besser-Samstag
Friends of Stereofox, a great record label and a chill coffee place located in Wiesbaden, Germany.
The team, led by Paddy, does a great job curating a chill-focused selection of jazzy lo-fi beats, built around soulful harmonies, rich horn melodies, and laid-back jazz-hop grooves.
