Sometimes, events or parties are just dire. The music is not good, or it's played on bad speakers; there's nowhere to put your stuff, and you don't wanna ask where the toilets are for fear of looking like an idiot. However, occasionally there'll be something that you go to, and when it's over you're left wondering why it ever ended. The party of Noisey & Philips for the launch of "You Need To Hear This" was definitely the latter.

The venue was incredible, like a big warehouse with two different main rooms and various other places in between. The first main room was for the bar (which was free!) and the second main room was for the music. There was then a little room with another, much less hectic, bar for people with VIP passes to go and get a drink. There was also a corridor type thing between the main rooms and the cloakroom/toilets – these had 3 stands with different types of Phillips headphones that you could try on to check the sound. I now have some called Citiscape (yay YNTH!) and they're fantastic. They enhance the song so much, you can hear things in it that you've never heard before.

IS TROPICAL live

Is Tropical came on at about 9:15. These are the guys that were followed by YNTHT on their trip to Mongolia, making them the first Western bands to play there [watch the video here]. A lot of positive energy and great vibe - they know exactly what they're doing. What I also really liked was that there was a real sense of unity between them – it didn't feel like all the attention was on a lead singer, and the other members of the band are just there to frame that person.

They seemed quite down to earth too; I spoke to the drummer, Dominic Apa, after their set, who was really cool and told me that they released their debut album earlier this year, and now will be doing Bestival and a couple of other summer festivals in the coming weeks. The highlight song of their set for me was “Dancing Anymore” that featured the vocals of a girl who got up on stage with them.

Mount Kimbie

Mount Kimbie were the closely-guarded secret of the evening. I'll be honest and say I hadn't listened to a great deal of their music before, but I thought they were a total jubilation! Their set was more chilled set than Is Tropical, as you would expect from post-dubstep; where Is Tropical are guitars and drums, Mount Kimbie revolve around synths and the like. People seemed to be rather excited for their set, with their fans straight down the front.

One song definitely stood out for me: “Before I Move Off”. It’s simple but effective, and is one that's made for chilling out yet isn't out of place at a club. There seemed to be an Oriental influence to their music, especially in the drums. The overall feel reminded me of James Blake, who has apparently worked with Mount Kimbie before.

You Need To Hear This party

It was a terrific night and I had a great time! A fantastic venue teamed with brilliant music and a good atmosphere. It’s sometimes the little things that can make or break a night - an out-of-the-box idea they had was to put a free photo booth that printed the photos out with the YNTHT logo on. Not only a great little memento for the night, but a reminder of whose night it was.
