Video Review: Beach House - "Forever Still"

Actually, first I wanted to present you Beach House’s new video "Wishes" which was released just a couple of weeks ago. In the main role is Ray Wise who is better known for his performance as Laura Palmer’s father in "Twin Peaks". In the video he plays the couch of a football team who comes on the playground and starts to sing with the beautiful soft voice of Victoria Legrand from Beach House. It’s a really amazing video (especially for the Twin Peaks’ fans like me who will always remember Wise in his brilliant role in the series). Well, my intention was to write about it but the accidentally I found something even better – "Forever Still". It is a short movie directed by Beach House and Max Goldman and produced by Pitchfork TV.

The movie is a music travelogue, an attempt to escape – from the city, from civilization, from reality. It’s so beautiful that it’s almost hard to write about it. It creates a very special mystical atmosphere, a bit melancholic but joyful at the same time.

First, you are in a car on the way out of the city. You are travelling and travelling until the road gets narrow, the other cars disappear and the landscape gets empty from all human sights. The first stop – on a hill in something like a desert the band plays "Wild". The sun is going down and by the end of the song it is already night. The journey starts again. A thunderstorm is coming.

The second stop is somewhere in the middle of nowhere. It is dark and the only light is coming from the cars behind the band. They are playing "The Hours".

Then again on the road. This time in the background you see only foggy lights and vapor coming ominously frontwards. The song is "Wishes". Is is over and Victoria is running – to catch the sunrise on another lonely place in the desert.

When they play "Irene" the sky is already full of colors – from dark blue to pink. It’s the end of a very special night.

"Forever Still" is absolutely amazing – not only the music, but also the whole aesthetics of the video – the colors, the light, the editing, the camera which moves or better to say flies all the time around the musicians who are now like lonely shamans in the desert.

In short: "Forever Still" is pure visual and audio pleasure!
