"Carrion Crow" is an electronic composition by Stephan Goldmann and directed by Peter Valchev. First of all, I would like to introduce Stefan Goldmann for those who don’t know him. He is one of the most interesting DJs and electronic composers in Europe and you don’t have to be the biggest fan of techno music to agree (just see how diverse projects are).

He is son of the famous German composer and conductor Friedrich Goldmann and the Bulgarian concert critic Lina Semowa. Stefan grew up between Berlin and Sofia which is to see both in his music and video clips. Exactly such an example is also the video I would like to present you here.

The video to "Carrion Crow" is filmed in Sofia and is a night trip in the capital of Bulgaria. The camera follows the way of the trash – from the overfilled containers in the center of the city to the suburbs. Here is the place to tell that the trash in Bulgaria has its own aesthetics – the big opened containers everywhere which just stay on the streets and dozens (literally) of cats playing around. The director of the video Peter Valchev, the camera operator Dolores Alvarado and the cutter Bohos Topakbashian show the artistic almost poetic side of view of this story.

The first that catches the eye are the beautiful colors of night Sofia – the changing lights of the street lamps, the traffic lights and the cars. Step by step, the editing is getting more and more dynamic – with very short and fast changing shots perfectly synchronized with the music. The other special thing about the editing is the joyful play with the speed – sometimes it runs faster then suddenly stops and continues slower. That creates a feeling of dynamics and you loose a sense of time.

When the garbage trucks come to empty the containers the journey begins – first you see a night landscape with fabric chimneys and then fast shots from the car window – you are travelling though whole Sofia from the suburbs and then back to center where the garbage containers are overfilled again.

In a way this video reminds me of Walter Ruttmann’s legendary movie "Berlin – Symphonie der Großstadt" (Berlin – Symophony of a Metropolis). Maybe because of the unusual and totally experimental way of showing the big city or maybe because of the sense of dynamics that both movies create. Even if it sounds like a paradox "Carrion Crow" leaves you with a kind of sympathy to Sofia despite the trash, the old socialistic ugly buildings and so on. After the end you will dream for a night walk thought the streets of Sofia.

In short: a beautiful video and amazing music by Stefan Goldmann.
