I had a rather late exposure to Loraine James' music, but once I gazed into the sonic world of the London-based producer, I quickly became obsessed. Reflection (2021) and Gentle Confrontation (2023) have a special place in my collection and a source of many introspective memories.
Last Friday, Loraine released her brand-new record Detached From The Rest Of You on XL Recordings, so a decent chunk of my Sunday was drifting away to beeps and bops, trying to explore the 1000 tiny details in many of the songs on the album.
The 12-track release draws inspiration from early 2000s glitch music, used as a vessel to build a world that feels both vast and elegant. If I have to use an adjective to describe it, that would be weightless. At least that's how it makes me feel.
For my spotlight of the day, I picked up "Score" featuring guest vocals from Anysia Kym. The song marries the experimental nature of the album with a soulful and intimate type of vocals, which adds a certain flair to the whole thing. A beautiful late-night fairy tale for those who like to build bridges between genres.
