With this release, it's clear the Canadian artist has reached new highs as his subject matter has diversified and touches on themes that reflect his inner world that go beyond romance. This new direction for Daniel actually reminds me of when Fleet Foxes released Shore - there is a rich spiritual appeal here, to the point where it sounds like we’re eavesdropping on his prayers as we listen to this album. This is elevated by collaborators who bring a passionate, uplifting energy - artists like Bon Iver, Sampha, Blood Orange, and Yebba.
One highlight of this album is "Have A Baby (With Me)", a listening experience brought to life by his inspiring vocal performance and a soundscape made to offer warmth and immersion. I also loved the way the guitars slowly danced around the drums, creating a rhythm that allows us to sway gently along with the progression of the track.
There is also something deeply personal about the album's title, as Spergy is the nickname of Daniel's father, gospel singer Norwill Simmonds. Much of the record feels like Daniel turning inward and trying to understand the relationship between fatherhood, faith, masculinity, and the person he is becoming, making Son of Spergy feel less like another R&B album and more like a personal exercise in reconciliation.
I also love how the album's production gives these themes room to breathe, often favouring space, gentle instrumentation, layered vocals, and slow-burning arrangements over anything too flashy.
