Emily and the Woods is an emerging talent lead by frontwoman and songwriter Emily Wood. Reminiscent of Joni Mitchell's full acoustic sound, Emily's pure vocals are paired with poetic lyrics to create a warmth that instantly connects. I recently had the pleasure of chatting with the London based singer/songwriter about her heartfelt folk style, influences, and deep appreciation for music.

These great photographs of the band are made by Timo who we collaborated with. He caught up with the band in their rehearsal room in London for a special exclusive photo session. You can see all the pictures at the bottom of the article. They are amazing!

Marisa: I'll admit I only first heard your music recently. How would you describe your sound to those unfamiliar with your music?

Emily: Rooted in a lyrical tradition and interest in poetry, the words are often the starting point for our songs. However, the live setup is 2 electric guitars, bass and drums and we are creating groove-based songs, with swelling guitar sounds and solid bass lines.

M: What was the first song you ever wrote and how has your style changed or developed since then?

E: It's hard to remember my first song! I think I came up with a bunch of songs when I was 17-18 that I played to my friends and I can't really remember what they were really about now but I'm sure I'd be embarrassed to hear them!

M: Who are some of you biggest inspirational musicians and how have they influenced you as both a person and an artist?

E: I feel inspired by the catalogue of Joni Mitchell's work – how many songs she has written and with such a diverse range of subjects and arrangement. I think Bombay Bicycle Club are also inspiring in that sense – they have released 3 albums that all sound very different, and I admire the courage to explore lots of possibilities and work in different ways.

M: You've been compared to Laura Marling and one of your inspirations, Joni Mitchell. Who do you personally feel your music is most similar to if you were to compare?

E: It's really difficult to know what you are similar to. Influences run very deep so it's quite hard to see what they are and how they might affect your music. I do admire songwriters such as Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, and also singers like Erykah Badu and Jill Scott!

M: What is currently on repeat on your iPod or whatever you use to listen to music?

E: Lately I have been listening to 'Tawk Tomahawk' by Hiatus Kaioyte, who we all recently saw live in London – they are brilliant and the live show was even more electrifying than the record!

M: Is there anyone you'd be star-struck to collaborate with?

E: I don't think I could look Thom Yorke in the eyes... I'd be so nervous! I have a dream to collaborate with him on something one day.

M: What is your favorite aspect of performing live? E: I love interacting with the audience; feeling their responses to different songs. And it's so brilliant to play onstage with your friends and family!

M: If you weren't a musician, what else could you see yourself doing?

E: I think I'd like to do something with lots of people around, maybe working for a charity of some kind... I do find people and their stories the most inspiring thing of all. Or perhaps I could be a painter!? I'd like that too.

M: What is the most surprising thing fans might not already know about you? E: Hmm... Maybe that I have a degree Philosophy and Theology?

M: So what’s next for Emily and the Woods in 2013 and beyond?!

E: We are about to go in to a studio and record an EP which we are all very excited about! It will be fantastic to have some new music out, and especially a chunk of work for people to get their teeth into I would like to release lots of music in the next year, and do lots of gigs too.

A huge thank you to Emily for taking the time to chat with us! We look forward to hearing much more from Emily and the Woods in the future! Be sure to check out both their EP's on iTunes and stay tuned for upcoming releases from the band!
