If you grew up on ’90s rock and grunge music, as I did, you will absolutely love this new album. I appreciate the rawness of the sound, and if you expect anything similar to his previous albums, whether that’s Heals Me or his self-titled release, just forget about it. This is a beast of its own, and a prime example of an artist embracing complete creative freedom. The centerpiece here is JMSN’s voice itself, and while there’s tons of loud, distorted music around it, the guitars and heavier production ultimately serve as the backdrop rather than dictating the direction of the album.

Over the years, JMSN (who is soon playing in Sofia, Bulgaria) has built a reputation for flawlessly navigating across genres, and his new release ...it's only about u if you think it is. encapsulates that refined artistry and creative freedom. Released via his own White Room Records in October 2025, the 10-track record is easily one of his biggest stylistic departures yet, leaning heavily into alternative rock while keeping his R&B sensibilities very much alive.
And honestly, I love that he went there and the bravery of experimentation. There’s something refreshing about hearing an artist who could comfortably stick to a proven formula instead choose to make something that might alienate part of his existing audience. The album's raw guitars, live-feeling rhythms and darker atmosphere give it a distinctly 90s edge, with influences that stretch from grunge and alternative rock to trip-hop and psychedelic soul.

What stood out in my first listen was "Dirty Dog" - a song which blends elements of garage rock, 70s psychedelia, soul, and JMSN’s signature string embellishments that wash over the mix towards the end. Across his verses, he is cool and collected with his performance while complementing the psychedelic nature of the track. Something tells me he’s got more surprises up his sleeve before the album drops, and I’m absolutely here for it.
