December 2020

When Stereofox was just starting out back in 2013, we have obviously kept tabs on all the best music blogs out there to get inspiration and validation whether we were doing the right thing. Some of them eventually became our friends later in our journey, some of them we still keeping tabs on. The reality is that a lot of blogs eventually died out for various reasons, but whether or not algorithms (to a great extent) control what people listen to nowadays, there are still quite a few people who keep pushing the art of writing about music. While the article is titled best music blogs, we are far from the reality that this is the full list of people who deserve praise in 2020. In case we missed a blog you like or follow - feel free to let us know!

As we are an international team, I have tried to come up with the list that would also cover the best music blogs in 2022 from across the globe.

IndieShuffle

Jason Groshkoff from IndieShuffle (and now SubmitHub) is Ivo’s pal and helped Stereofox out with a lot of his advice back in the day. Hi Jason! I have personally discovered so much new stuff on IndieShuffle that at some point it was my go-to almost every day to see what’s out there. A huge pool of writers helps create a very diverse genre landscape, there is really something for everyone. With the focus on indie music, obviously.

Nialler9

This is my go-to for all the Irish music news, including releases, parties and gigs. The blog has it all! The man behind the website is also DJing here and there, and creates sweet handpicked Spotify playlists (we all love us some good regularly updated Spotify playlists, don’t we!)

Stereogum

Yet another behemoth of music blogging, Stereogum was created back in 2002 and after going back and forth with lots of different investors, Scott Lapatine, the founder of the website, has made it an independent publication once again. Go Scott!

Stay up to date.

New music and exclusive updates in your inbox weekly.

The focus of the website is on the music news, reviews, commentary and album reviews. Stereogum was one of the first websites to write about the likes of Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend and Billie Eilish.

Pitchfork

The most trusted voice in music as they call themselves, is indeed one of the flagships of the music blogs. I feel like it’s almost a bit of a stretch to call them a music blog, as this has become a source of all entertainment news. Launched all the way back in 1995, Pitchfork is still at the forefront of sharing new music. Influential yes, albeit sometimes a tiny bit too pretentious for my liking.

NPR - All Songs Considered

Tapping more into the territory of radio shows/podcasts, All Songs Considered creates a great opportunity to upgrade your playlist: every Friday there is a line up of new music, all sorts of mixes, some nerdy music news, as well as my all-time favourite Tiny Desk Concerts

FACT Magazine

Transmission from the underground, oh how well this describes Fact Mag. It started as a print publication, but quickly grew into an online zine. Fact Mixes, for all the electronic music fans is a great way to discover new bedroom and not-so bedroom producers through carefully curated mixes.

COLORS (Berlin)

Finishing up with another hybrid between a label and a music show - COLORS. So many great artists have first appeared in an empty monochrome room in their studio. There are no special effects, tricks or distractions, just plain good music. There is a super wide range of music from popular artists to someone unsigned and extremely underground (bound to blow up after being on COLORS show though). Personally, I have discovered lots of great new artists in a visually pleasing environment.

Pilerats

Since some of us have borderline unhealthy obsession with all things Aussie music, we had to include a couple of Australian blogs in this lineup. Focusing both on music and lifestyle, Pilerats is not just a music blog, but more of a creative collective, as well as a record label. Reminds me of a certain European fox. Wink, wink.

Acid Stag

We can't be talking about Australia's blog scene and miss on Jez. A true legend. The dude has been pushing the platform for more than 10 years now and has ventured out into music management and A&R. If you loved discovering acts like JVLY or Akurei on our platform, the main responsible for that is Jez himself.

Acid Ted

Easily one of the OGs in the blogging game who are still around. Dating all the way back to 2008, the website has remained consistent throughout the years and Ted provides nothing, but spot-on commentary when it comes to electronic dance, techno, house, and ambient music.

The New LoFi

"The New LoFi is an exploration in new music. We exist to promote good music and the artists behind it."

Amen. James and Damon have been pushing up-and-coming artists since 2010 and their website is always a great breath of fresh air when things get stale on the discovery front for us.

High Five For

This isn’t a competition. It’s a collaboration.

Gotta love Jeremy. One of the truly inspirational storytellers of the blog scene in 2020. He recently covered one of our artists on the label - misc.inc and that was the reason I discovered his section Highly Recommended - a really creative way to let us readers peak into the world of up-and-coming artists.

Bonus

If you speak Bulgarian and love good music, you should check out our favourite Bulgarian radio stations, where our very own Nasko appeared a few times co-hosting shows and being an all round good lad: Binar and Falshimento.
